That’s what these children in Year 5 will be doing this weekend – they all took home a bag of delicious spuds that were planted a few months ago when Konni Deppe from Edible Hightown visited and worked with our Eco Squad.
The children had planted the potatoes from seed during the spring term, and they have been checking on them regularly, giving them water if necessary – although with the amount of rain we had in the spring the plants didn’t need much more!
Yesterday, Friday 21 June, Konni returned to school to harvest the crop that had grown.
There was much excitement as no one knew quite how well the potatoes had grown. The plants all seemed healthy from the look of the leaves growing above the soil, but you don’t know if you have a good crop of produce until you come to actually dig them up.
The photos below show exactly what happened when our green-fingered gardeners set to work.
We asked our gardeners what the potatoes had tasted like.
Aamnah from Kingfisher said: My mum cooked them with beef and vegetables – she chopped and boiled the potatoes and they tasted lovely!
Nadia’s mum cooked roast chicken and vegetables to have with her potatoes.
David’s mum sliced them thinly to make French fries which they had with tomato ketchup. They tasted amazing!
Haanyiah from Snapdragon class said: My dad is an excellent cook. He did a delicious spicy potato curry. My sister said they were the best things grown in the ground that she had ever tasted.
Karina’s mum cooked her potatoes with plantain and sweetcorn to make a sort of potato stew!

Finally, Aamnah’s dad said: We should not buy potatoes from a shop anymore. We should think about growing our own from now on.
