Dear Parents/Carers,
We are excited to inform you that as part of our commitment to raising aspirations for further education, our Year 5 pupils will be visiting the University of Bedfordshire. Lunch will be provided for all pupils, and there is no change to the usual start and finish times. Please ensure your child comes to school as usual on their visit day.

17/09/2024: YEAR 6 HIGH SCHOOL APPLICATIONS
Dear parents,
Welcome to Year 6 and your child’s final year at St. Matthew’s Primary School. It might seem like a long way off but your child will transfer to high school next year. Please read this email carefully as it contains some very important information.
High school applications must be completed by 31st October 2024.

We would strongly encourage you to visit your local high schools before applying. I have attached a list of open days to this email. Information about the open days can also be found on the high school websites.
To support you with your application, we will hold a parent/carer meeting with a representative from the local authority. Here you will be shown how to apply, given information about catchment areas, discuss chances of getting into local schools and have an opportunity to ask questions. We will also briefly discuss how we as a school are preparing your child for high school.
These meetings will take place on:
- Monday 30th September at 3:30pm – Eagle and Orchid Class
- Monday 7th October at 3:30pm – Oak and Wolf Class
Please come to your child’s classroom door at the end of the day and we will show you in. Your child can attend the meeting with you.
We look forward to seeing you there.
If you need support with your child’s application, please make an appointment to see our family worker by contacting the school office on 01582 723970 or by emailing admin.stmatthews@smps.uk.

Year 4 swimming lessons will take place on Thursday mornings at Inspire Luton Sports Village; we will travel to the swimming pool by double decker bus where your child will take part in a 40-minute lesson before coming back to school.
For swimming your child will need:
- Boys – Swimming trunks/shorts, above knee length. (To be worn to school under their
PE kit) - Towel.
- Girls – Swimming costume, NO bikinis. (To be worn to school under their PE kit)
- Towel.
- For modesty girls may wear leggings and/or a T-shirt over their swimming costume.
Please note:
- Goggles are not needed.
- Swimming hats are not provided but are recommended for all children with long
hair. - Boys and girls will change in seperate changing rooms
Swimming is part of the National Curriculum and all children must take part in these
sessions. If for any reason your child cannot swim one particular week please send them
into school with a signed note giving a brief explanation.
School swimming lessons are designed to give the children the skills they need to be safe in
and around water; they are not a substitute for regular swimming lessons. For this reason we
ask that if your child attends swimming lessons outside of school that you keep them in the
sessions during the time that they are having their in school swimming lessons.
The lessons cater for all abilities, whether your child has never swum before or they regularly
attend lessons out of school. The lessons are led by Active Luton swimming teachers and
assisted by the St Matthew’s PE team who will be in the water alongside the children
ensuring they are able to get the most from their lessons.
If you have any further questions or concerns regarding your child attending school
swimming lessons, please call or email the school office.
Many thanks
Mr Drew
