There were two music presentations on Friday 12th July. Following the Year 3 recorder concert in the morning, our Year 5 classes presented a showcase of their learning in music this year in the afternoon.
Like Year 3, the Year 5 classes’ music curriculum focuses on learning one instrument across the year. In Year 5 the instrument is the guitar. The lessons are taught by Mr Tom Green from Luton Music Service – the same Mr Green who used to work full-time at St Matthew’s leading a range of creative projects across the school.
The classes worked in pairs to present a song with one class singing and the other class accompanying them on the guitar. Snapdragon and Maple teamed up to perform together, while Otter and Kingfisher performed their songs together.

Clarinettists On Tour '24
Fresh from their performance at the Year 3 Music Presentation earlier in the day, the three solo clarinettists performed again for the Year 5 audience. These three pupils started to learn the recorder when they were in Year 3 and took the opportunity to move on to the clarinet when they moved into Year 4. They have all passed Grade 1 and they gave three solo recitals of pieces they were learning for their Grade 2 exam.
Jake played
“Waltz For Libby” (again!)
James played
“Gavotte” (again!)
Meredith played
“Pieces of Eight” (again!)
*** STOP PRESS *** We have since found out that Jake and Meredith took their Grade 2 Clarinet exam at Queen Elizabeth School the day before our Year 3 and Year 5 Music Presentations. Meredith passed her exam with a score of 118 while Jake passed with distinction with a score of 132. Congratulations and well done to both musicians, and good luck to James when the time comes for taking your exam.
