It is now just over two years since schools closed in March 2020 when the first national lockdown was announced by HM Government.
We are now entering a new phase, called Living With Covid, and we are soon to see a return to normal procedures here at St Matthew’s … albeit a “new normal”.
Despite suffering a local outbreak of cases towards the end of January and into February, the measures taken (with the support of Public Health England) enabled us to return to the way things were at the start of the spring term
Morning sports, arts and games clubs resumed with numerous children signing up for these activities. We have a new date for the Young Voices concert. Our choir members will be heading for the RW Arena in Birmingham in May for what promises to be an amazing event for participants and audiences. The next phase for sports clubs will be the return of competitions with other primary schools and we hope that these activities will return soon.
Some children have enjoyed educational visits during the spring term. Year 2 visited London to see The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre. This was an incredibly enjoyable experience for everyone – for some it was their first visit to a professional live performance. Our Year 4 classes took part in their first ever residential visit just before the Easter break with each class having an overnight stay at The Chellington Centre in the north of Bedfordshire. We’ve become good friends with the people at Chellington and our Year 5 and 6 classes will enjoy similar visits during the summer term – with an all-new programme of activities alongside the return of some favourites from last year’s visits.
Mr Chaplen and Mr Parker launched their new fundraising event – The Step On The Pedal Challenge – which will see them and others cycle from Luton to London to Cardiff to Edinburgh and back to Luton during October. We have already received some generous sponsorship from local businesses and there will be opportunities for the whole school community to get involved in supporting this event. Who knows – we might see the return of the World Famous St Matthew’s Cake Sale!
From the start of the summer term, on Wednesday 20th April 2022, we look forward to welcoming parents back on to the school site. All children will start school at the same time (from 8:45am) – no more staggered drop-offs. Parents can bring their children to their classrooms and collect them at pick-up time (3:20pm for Year R, 1 and 2; 3:25pm for Year 3-6). There will be no restrictions on access gates – all gates will be open so just use the one that is most convenient for you. Full details can be found here.
