Translating Google Classroom

Google Classroom works best in the desktop or tablet browser Google Chrome. One of the advantages of using Google Chrome to work in Google Classroom is that there are free extensions to the browser to further increase the performance of Google Classroom.

One of these is the Google Translate Chrome extension. It can be added to your browser at no cost by following this link:

Once the extension has been installed, you will see the Google Translate extension button on the toolbar near the top of the screen.

If you click on the button, you will see the following box:

Click on TRANSLATE THIS PAGE and you will be given a range of languages to use:

For the purposes of this article, we have chosen to translate a page sample from the Google Classroom for Robin Class in Year 3 into Polish.

Unfortunately, the Google Translate extension does not work with attached documents such as PDFs, Powerpoints, etc. but hopefully the instructions that the class teacher includes in the lesson introduction will enable parents to understand the teacher’s expectations and intentions.

Google Translate is not a perfect translation tool, but it is pretty much the best free one around. Some phrases cannot be translated but hopefully the translated text will give the general meaning and parents will be able to further support children with their home learning.
