Christmas Music

Today sees the launch of our amazing Christmas video which comprises twenty-one fantastic musical performances by the whole school.

Good things do come out of awful pandemics and here is the proof. Forget the John Lewis ad — this will become the video that everyone wants to see.

Normally, many school choirs would visit Luton Airport to perform live in the lobby to entertain travellers as they pass through arrivals and departures. Because of the Covid-19 restrictions, this was obviously not going to be possible this Christmas. So we were asked by the airport and Luton Music Service if we could fill the gap with a virtual choir concert.

We don’t do things by halves at St Matthew’s, so we decided the whole school should get involved, not just the forty or so children who would have formed the choir this year.

Each class chose a song to practise and perform and then over a couple of days at the end of November, our Common Room was transformed into a magical winter wonderland of twinkles and sparkles and each class came in to perform their musical entertainment, led by Julia Fraser from Luton Music Service and recorded by our very own Tom Green.

Mr Green then spent many hours editing the footage to create the magnificent video that you can see below. Visitors to our website this weekend have an exclusive opportunity to see the video before it is played on the screens in the airport lobby. The video will receive its first public broadcast on Monday 14th December and will be played at regular intervals daily until Christmas Eve.

We hope that travellers passing through the airport will be cheered by the sights and sounds of our children’s songs. We also hope, as there will be opportunity to donate, that they will feel the urge to contribute to the collection for Macmillan Cancer Support. We have supported Macmillan for many years at St Matthew’s, having witnessed the remarkable work they do with people who have received a diagnosis — including some of our own friends and colleagues.

If you would like to contribute to the collection, you can visit the Just Giving page set up by Luton Airport by clicking the button below and donating online.

And now, enjoy the video …
