Walking For The Foodbank

St Matthew’s Primary School has been a friend and supporter of the Luton Foodbank charity for a number of years.

We have collected food items on many occasions – once the whole floor of our Common Room was covered with bags and bags of donations. We have also held fundraising days to raise money to give to the foodbank organisers. So it is with immense pride that we can inform visitors that one of our pupils has decided to embark on an individual fundraising effort.

Dirk, from Otter Class in Year 5, will be spending part of his summer holiday walking the ancient Ridgeway National Trail. This is a 139km route that goes from Avebury in Wiltshire to Ivinghoe Beacon near Dunstable. Dirk will be attempting the walk with his dad and they expect the expedition to take nine days. They will be carrying all of their food and sleeping equipment and pitching their tent along the route each night.

Dirk’s dad has set up an online donation page on the Virgin Money Giving website. Dirk’s original target was a modest £139 – £1 per kilometre, but he reached that amount quite quickly and has now set his sights higher with a target of £10 per kilometre, hoping to raise the grand sum of £1390. At the time this article was published, Dirk was close to achieving half of his new target, with some weeks to go before the trek take place.

Well done, Dirk! (and Dad!) We are all really proud of you! Good luck when you do your walk.
