We arrived at school this morning to find that the black cat that frequently visits the school had given birth to a kitten overnight. A tiny ball of black fluff was sitting on the gravelled area outside the Year 5 classrooms as the proud mother watched over her new kitten. We put the kitten in a box with a bed of shredded paper and moved it to a safer place in the garden of the Next Steps hut. We called a local cat rescue centre who came and took both cats away to be looked after safely.
***UPDATE*** Apparently the lady from the cat rescue centre estimated that the kitten was probably approximately two weeks old, so mother and kitten must have been sheltering somewhere warm and safe. Maybe the recent warm weather gave them the urge to venture out for the first time.
